World Champion Ato Boldon and adidas Form Partnership
March 18, 1999--Pursuing Olympic gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters means years of training will produce results measured in fractions of a second. Ato Boldon knows that in his razor's edge sport, where success is defined in that narrow gap between the ticks of a stopwatch, each aspect of training is crucial. That is why adidas is proud to announce our new partnership with Ato Boldon, the reigning World Champion at 200 meters, and hope that we can play a role in helping Ato achieve his goal of becoming the world's fastest man.
The alliance between adidas and Ato is a natural fit, considering the traits that we share. Ato's inspiration is fellow Trinidad native Haseley Crawford, the 1976 Olympic 100 meter champion. But while Ato is driven by this hero from the past, he utilizes the best of what is currently available to better his running. Every detail of his training and racing is tailored to make him the fastest man alive. His coach is widely acknowledged as the best in the business. His training partners are his primary competition, pushing him day in and day out. Ato even keeps a library of videotapes of other sprinters so he can analyze their form. In short, Ato knows that challenging himself is the only way to get better. At adidas, we know this too. Although our heritage is rooted in making equipment for some of history's greates athletes, we also realize that we cannot become complacent in our quest to lead the industry. It is only through innovations in research, testing, and materials, that adidas, like Ato, can continue to set a new standard of excellence.
"adidas' objective is to provide Ato with functional shoes that can insure the optimum transfer of energy," Says Ciro Fusco, a research manager with the adidas Sydney 2000 Project. "In a sporting event where hundredths of a second might signify a gold medal, energy dissipation must be minimized. All results from adidas' long standing research pursuing efficiency and functionality will be applied through the making of Ato's shoes."
In this new relationship, adidas hopes to provide tools that will assist a talented artist like Ato to create races that are fairly viewed as masterpieces. His skills on the track are evident: In addidtion to his 200 meter World title, Ato owns personal bests of 9.86 for the 100 meters and 19.77 for the 200 meters. In 1998, he recorded the fastest official times in both the 100 and 200, making him the first man since Carl Lewis did it in 1987 to accomplish that feat. And Ato is just starting to realize his potential. He was the youngest athlete to ever run under 9.90 for the 100 meters. At age 22, Ato won bronze medals in both the 100 and 200 at the 1996 Olympic Games, and the 25-year-old already had run more sub-9.90 100 meter races than anyone else in history.
"I am extremely excited to have formed this alliance with adidas," Ato Says. "My first major titles [the 100 and 200 meters at the 1992 World Junior Championships] were won in adidas equipment, and adidas has continued to excel as a brand since that time. I feel honored to have associated myself with such a devoted group of talented professionals."
adidas took another step into the NFL by sealing a partnership this year with the San Francisco 49ers, beginning in the 1999 season. The 49ers, who made their NFL debut in 1950, share a history and tradition similar to adidas. Described by a rival coach as "not big enough or tough enough" when they won only three games that first year, the 49ers went on to prove that they were indeed big and tough. The 49ers have become perennial winners in the NFL, and earned the title "The Team of the '80s", when their head coach Bill Walsh led them to three Super Bowl titles in one decade (1981, 1984, 1988). Football great, quarterback Joe Montana, earned Super Bowl MVP awards in each of those games making him one of the legends of football. In 1998, the 49ers finished out their season at 12-4, making it into the second round of the playoffs.

In August 1998, adidas completed its fifth and final all-school partnership, reaching a multi-year agreement with UCLA beginning July 1, 1999. As part of the agreement, adidas will contribute educational, marketing and promotional support, create several internship opportunities for UCLA students, and will be the exclusive licensee for athletic replica wear and authentics. adidas will also provide equipment and apparel to UCLA's 21 intercollegiate teams and other campus units. UCLA has one of the most highly respected athletic programs in the country, ranked No. 1 with a total of 77 NCAA Team Championships. In 1997-98, UCLA placed fourth nationally in competition for the Fifth Annual Sears Directors Cup, and in the four previous years has placed either second or third. The Cup recognizes the school with the best overall sports performance in an academic year and awards points based on finishes in NCAA competition. But, the 80-year-old school has more than just a great athletic tradition; it is also one of the finest academic institutions in the country. Since 1952, UCLA has had 79 Academic All-Americans. The addition of UCLA adds to the already outstanding group of all-school partnerships.
The New York Yankees became the World Series Champions for the 24th time in 35 appearances. They topped off a record-setting season by winning the 1998 World Series, taking it in a four-game sweep against the San Diego Padres, the first sweep in eight years. It was the second World Series title in three years for the Yankees, who finished their season with a remarkable 125 wins and 50 losses, including the postseason. They have won 15 more World Series than any other baseball club and this championship gave them the most in pro sports, one more than the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL. This year's team, capping one of the best seasons in sports history, is being hailed as the best ever in professional baseball. Said Joe Torre, who was named American League Manager of the Year: "To me, the Yankees represent baseball."

X Games
1998 was the year adidas stepped actively into the Alternative sport segment of the market. After designing and developing sake and BMX product that we felt met the needs of those consumers, we took the next step and formed partnerships with some of the sport's top athletes in BMX stunt bike riding and skateboarding. We then aligned ourselves with the largest high profile alternative event in existence: the X Games. The Games held in June 1988 were an enormous success, boasting a record crowd of 242,850 over the 10 days of competition. Dave Mirra, BMX stunt bike rider for the Haro Bike Team was the undisputed star of the X Games, becoming the first athlete ever to win three gold medals and named the 1998 outstanding male athlete of the X Games.
